Behind the camera

I'm Nate Nelson. I photograph the Great Smoky Mountains and the wild places around them — elk in the river at first light, the Milky Way over a quiet ridge, an eagle turning against a hard blue sky.

My goal has always been simple: help people see that an unbelievable photo doesn't require unbelievable gear. Most of what's on this page was taken with patience, early mornings, and a willingness to stand in the cold a little longer than is reasonable.
